WHY A QUALIFICATION IN OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH?

The occupational Safety and Health Act ( OSHA 1994 )" the appointment of a Competent Safety and
Health Officer in certain industries is mandatory "

As of 2004, there are only 2500 Safety and health Officers who are qualified are registered with the
Department of Occupational Safety and health ( DOSH ) Malaysia. Based on a report by
DOSH Malaysia requires an estimated 5000 individuals who are qualified in this area by the year 2005

current Safety and Health Officers are encouraged to upgrade their qualifications to
enhance their knowladge and skills as for career advancement
It shall be the duty of a Safety & Health Officer
-
To advise the employer or any person in charge of a place of work on the measures to be taken in the interests
of a safety and health of the person employed in the place work
-
To inspect the place of work to determine whether and machinery, plant, equipment, substance, appliance or process or any descripsion
of manual labour used in the place or work, is of such nature liableto cause bodily injury to any person working in the place of work

To investigate any accident, near miss, dangerous occurrence, occupational poisoning or occupational disease this has happened in the place work

To assist employer or Safety & Health Committee, if any,pursuant to regulation 11of the Occupational Safety and Health (Safety and Health Commitee)
Regulations 1996 in organizing and implementing Occupational Safety and Health programme at the place of work

To become the secretery of a Safety & Health Committee, if any, as specified under subregulation 6 (2) of the Occupational Safety & Health (Safety & Health Commitee)
Regulation 1996, and perform all functions of a secretary as specified in that Regulation

To assist the Safety and Health Commitee in any inspection of the place of work for the purpose of checking the effectiveness and efficacy of any measures taken in
compliance with the Act or any regulation made under the Act

To collect, analyse and maintain statistics on any accident,dangerous occurrence, occupational poisoning,occupational disease which have occurred at the place work

To assist any officers in carrying out hi duty under the Act or any regulation made under Act
-
To carry out any other instruction made by the employer or any person in charge of the place of work on any matters pertaining to safety and health of the place of work
